This project is an ideal summative assessment in a unit on holidays and celebrations in Spanish-speaking countries. Though it could be done at any time of year, it is a great project for the end of the school year, as it fills the unstructured days after testing with student-led, experiential learning. It also meets a variety of requirements to be a true PBL (project-based learning) unit. Students will answer the question “How would we celebrate a Spanish-speaking holiday?” by planning and throwing a safe, feasible, authentic, fun, affordable, and school-appropriate party that imitates the Hispanic celebration of their choice. Students will present their ideas to each other in Spanish, then vote on the proposal they want to bring to life. The winning proposal will be presented to a school administrator for approval, and then the students will set-up, have, and clean-up the party themselves. In addition to diving deep on a holiday from the Spanish-speaking world, this project develops students’ real world skills by forcing them to think creatively about organizing an event for their classmates from start to finish.
