I love reading Ana María Matute's stories with my classes. They're great for character education and lead to fabulous classroom discussions. I'm always amazed at how insightful teenagers can be. This story is very short but packed with lots of meaning.
Each object in the story is a metaphor. I have students looks up unknown vocabulary and tell them they're clues. For example, the mention of a flower which in the old days in Spain was used as a heart remedy. Students then come to the conclusion that the little girl had a heart condition.
Of all the stories we read in class, this story always makes an impact on my students. Great story to start a discussion about bullying and how to prevent bullying in school.
