With this lab activity, students will first use the Power Point to start their 'lab write-up'. When the written portion of their lab is complete, they will break into separate groups, and create elements using colored balloons. The students will then assemble compounds from those elements. Finally, students will fill a container with their models to make mixtures. All this activity eventually boils down to the students identifying and differentiating between elements, compounds, and mixtures.
The Power Point and write-up encourages students to better understand the scientific method and prepare for future grade levels in which writing up a lab is expected.
A setup design for the lab in your classroom is also included! I have tried out a few ways and this way works the best... plus it catches the students' interest when they walk in the room!
Required materials: Colored Water Balloons, Tape/String, Sharpie, and large clear storage containers.
