How many times have you been told not to play with your food? Well, in this lab, that's exactly what we're going to do! Get students more engaged in studying Biomolecules by testing common foods for starch, protein, and lipids. Students will have opportunities to work collaboratively to measure, apply lab safety knowledge, follow scientific method, identify lab equipment, record and analyze data. A lab report can be written for any of the tests, or have students generate a report for one food in all four tests, if you choose.
Students should have prior introduction to biomolecules and lab safety procedures. While any foods can be tested, it is very simple to test a common staple lunch: peanut butter, jelly, bread and an apple.
