Product Description
Bond With a Classmate is a kinesthetic lab activity designed to help students improve their understanding of ionic bonding. In particular, this activity helps students with the idea that ionic compounds are formed by the combination of positive (+) cations and negative (-) anions in set ratios.

From the Teacher's Guide:

During the activity, each student is given a sticker to wear with the chemical symbol and charge of a particular ion. Students are then instructed to move around the classroom and find an ion of opposite charge to bond with. After students find an appropriate "ion" to bond with, they sit down together and write down key information about the compound they are about to form in a data table. Specifically, students are to record the chemical symbol and charge of each ion, the chemical formula for the new ionic compound, and the name of the new compounds formed. Once the ionic compound is successfully formed, students then "break free" of their bond(s) in order to find another ion with which to combine with. After 5 total bonds, students are asked to switch stickers with their last bonding partner and start bonding again 5 more times for a grand total of 10 bonds.

Product Contents:

Page 1 provides detailed directions for completing the activity, a blank data table for recording information about the ions and resulting compound that forms, and 3 analysis questions that summarize the activity.

Page 2 is a full, color-coded answer keys that provides answers for the 3 analysis questions, as well as providing sample student data.
