Why are some volcanoes explosive and some are not? Why do some igneous rocks have large crystals and some you can't see any crystals? What is magmatic differentiation anyway?
What does this have to do with rock forming minerals?
I put this lab together to show students how Bowens Reactions Series works. It shows students where each mineral would be located on the series and at what temperature each crystallizes out at in the magma chamber.
Through doing this lab, students will be able to explain how magmatic differentiation works and why a quartz and an olivine can NEVER be found in the same rock.
