This lab activity reinforces the idea of energy loss in a food chain or trophic pyramid. Students act as one of five members in a food chain: as a sun, a plant, a caddisfly larva, a crayfish, or a trout. They must work to send calories (beads) up the food chain, while using a large portion of those calories in other metabolic activities. In practice, this activity ends up being REALLY fun for students and very effective at teaching kinesthetic learners. I have included some essential teacher tips to make this activity less of a headache for you- along with my best estimates of how you should split up classes of different sizes into the five jobs. As I continue to do this activity in my classes, I may be updating that portion of the file (for you to redownload, of course) and I would also welcome any data you obtain in that regard.
Zip file contains: 1.PDF of student worksheets, to guarantee formatting and for easy printing, 2.Word document of student worksheets, to make it easier to edit. 3. PDF of teacher notes, table labels, and cup labels, also for easy printing 4. Word document of same, for easy editing.
Document is my original work, but the idea for the lab is not. I did this lab at a school where I was substituting and recreated it from memory. Price reflects this. I have included the full description of the students’ jobs in my free preview download, since I did not make this lab up from scratch.
