What is density? What is hardness? What is cleavage? What is streak? How do you find each?
This lab comes with notes on density, hardness, cleavage and streak that can be copied right onto an overhead (24 point font). It also includes a Mohs Hardness scale that can be used as either an overhead or a hand-out along with the hardness of each birthstone, something students really enjoy learning about!
This lab has a step by step process for beginning general science or earth science students to find volume and density of rectangles before moving on to more difficult specimens such as the actual minerals.
You will need to supply the minerals, rectangular solids and graduated cylinders for this lab but overall, it is a very easy to use lab with a quick set up and take down.
This lab also reflects lab procedures and mineral information that can be found in the California State Science standards.
Have fun with it! I know my students enjoy it! You can even use it as a performance assessment on the physical properties of minerals!
