This is the "stair lab" where students calculate the power they generate walking up the stairs versus running up the stairs. Before beginning the lab, they will predict their horsepower equivalent for each and then compare their hypotheses to the calculated values found experimentally in the lab.
This is a relatively simple and straightforward lab that demonstrates the connection between work and gravitational potential energy in certain physical situations (like walking up the stairs). Additionally, it provides a connection to power units (watts and horsepower) to something they have physically done and can thus more easily relate to.
NOTE: Stairs are required for this lab! The only other equipment needed is a stopwatch.
