Excellent early year lab investigation. I use this as my 2nd of the year. (My first is a constructivist lab, posted here called "Evidence of a Chemical Reaction.") This lab engages students in the exploration of the behavior of substances upon warming. This is largely a qualitative lab. The idea here is to discover that upon heating, some substances undergo physical change, some undergo chemical change, and some appear to not change at all.
This lab is likely to require 3 class periods - one to pre-lab and then start, one to conduct the balance of the trials, then one to post lab and lead into the next lab (which I have posted here as a quantitative study of warming/cooling behavior.)
