"Ok, kids, today you get to use acid to make metal disappear!" That statement always makes my students excited for this lab. This lab is a great way to have your students learn about chemical reactions while working with Magnesium (it's also a safe alternative to lighting magnesium on fire). This lab allows students to see many of the side effects of chemical reactions: heat release, gas production, change in properties. Make sure to give your students plenty of time to do this lab-- in the past we have run out of time and I have had to cut it short, making them really "bummed" that they were not able to see the metal totally disappear. Not only is this lab an easy and fun lab to conduct, but it is also a breeze to grade!
