What is a Miracle Berry? It is berry found on a Miracle Berry tree in Africa. Anything that a person eats after eating a berry tastes sweet. This is good, right? Is it really? What are the pros and cons with this?
This is a lab to get students thinking about and talking about the pros and cons genetically engineered foods. The first part of this lab is a prelab about engineered food and irrigation facts from around the world.
Students then get to try some really bitter/sour foods such as lemon grass, lemons, limes, sour patch kids, etc. They get to eat, if they wish to participate, a miracle berry tablet purchased from a reputable company on Amazon.com. Then they start a conversation about whether it really is ideal that people around the world with malnutrition eat these things.
This is a lab that will get into a student's long term memory! If you couple this lab with the video, "We Are the World", and show them pictures from, "What People Eat From Around the World", students will really think about the pros and cons of genetically engineered foods and whether its the promise or problem of the future!
This is definitely one of those labs that will get the conversation going!
This lab would also work for a beginning biology class!
