Lab: Reaction Rates
Share

Description

I wrote this lab to help my students gain a deeper understanding of reaction rates in our chemistry unit. This lab provides them with hands-on experience by manipulating: temperature, surface area and concentration in chemical reactions to understand the relationship they have on reaction rates. This 3 part lab includes analysis questions as well as graphing. A detailed answer key is included as well as an informational sheet with teacher tips. If you are looking for a fun and easy lab to do during your chemistry unit, this is it! Plus, you may not even have too much prep to do since you may already have the supplies needed for this one! I hope you and your students enjoy it :)

Product includes:

  • Teacher instructions & tips
  • Multi-page lab packet (with graphing)
  • Answer key!

This activity started out great. I like the way it is laid out and the prompts it provides. My class ran into problems in the third part of the activity. The activity calls for varying the concentration of vinegar, which is a weak acid. As the concentration of a weak acid increases, proton dissociation decreases causing the reaction to take longer. Because of this, my students got a graph that is the inverse of what they expected for this section. It caused great confusion that is difficult to clarify because they do not have enough knowledge of chemistry to understand the complexities of weak acid behavior. It might be better to just keep going with the tablets and water. Vary the amount (concentration) of the tablet, such as a full tablet, a half, and a quarter. The timing of that reaction would show more representative data.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I’ve never actually had that happen before but I’m going to try and replicate what happened in your classroom and see what changes I can make to the lab. Thank you again for letting me know what happened.
