Biology Lab: Release of Heat in an Enzymatic Reaction
Suitable for Biology students in grades 9-12.
Enzymes are required inside living cells to speed up chemical reactions. In this lab you will be measuring the amount of heat released as hydrogen peroxide is broken down into water and oxygen by the catalase in living cells.
Catalase is an enzyme that is commonly found in plant and animal tissues. The function of the enzyme catalase is to break down the chemical hydrogen peroxide inside living cells. Within cells, hydrogen peroxide is thought to be formed continually as an end product of biochemical reactions such as cellular respiration. Because it is toxic, or poisonous, it would soon kill the cell if it were not removed or broken down immediately.

• Liver homogenate
• 25 x 200 test tube
• 3% hydrogen peroxide solution
• 600 mL beaker
• Insulating material (packing peanuts, styrofoam, sand)
• Graph paper
