Capture students attention with this interactive lesson that covers lab safety procedures in the science classroom. Works well with any secondary level science class that includes labs, such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This lesson was designed for one block period (90 minutes), and can be shortened to take one 45 minute period if needed.
All materials are included for a learner-centered approach on teaching safety in the science classroom. PowerPoint slides prompt students to brainstorm lab safety rules in small groups, share their ideas with the class, close read a Flynn safety contract (link to Flynn resources provided), draw a diagram of the science classroom (with attention to exits, fire extinguishers, water sources, etc.), read nonfiction articles on lab accidents, answer text-based questions on nonfiction articles, and create a poster on lab safety. Student notes sheet guides student focus during the PowerPoint presentation.
I've found that students enjoy applying the rules to the articles through class discussions. We also discuss who is at fault when something goes wrong in the lab. Students enjoy applying information from the articles to their lab posters.
If shortening this lesson, the articles or poster activity can be cut out. Documents are in PowerPoint and Word, making them easy for you to edit to suit your classroom expectations and requirements.
