I have created several thematic power point units that I have used for the past 6 years in my own science classroom in the state of Ohio. My most recent power-points have been strategically aligned to Ohio’s New Learning Standards for 5th grade science, but I am sure they will prove applicable to the standards set by other states and for additional grade levels seeing that Lab Safety is a universal science concept.
Each of these power-points has been field tested in my classroom as well as several other classrooms. They are highly engaging with graphics, real life situations, funny stories and other attributes that make the learning process fun and engaging. Teachers who have not been as familiar with the science curriculum or content have found them incredibly helpful in teaching the content. I am selling them in the power-point & word format so as to allow the purchaser to make changes and modifications as they see fit.All files are also able to be uploaded to student devices if your school has moved to a one to one device system.
Included with this unit is the teachers guide, the power point, Claims, Evidence and Reasoning Questions (CER Questions), quizzes, and an explanation of student notes.
In my classroom students keep a “science notes” spiral ring notebook. Within this notebook students keep their notes for the year. Students use these notes on a daily basis and are constantly referring to them to find or check information. Each power-point that I produce is color coded. The color of the title page font is the “magic color,” for that unit. For example the, the unit title for the “Scientific Tools” unit is written in bright yellow. The students would subsequently title the next blank page in their notes, “Scientific Tools,” anything on the following slides for that unit written in the same bright yellow font would be something the students would copy verbatim in to their notes. You obviously can ignore this added feature if you want, but I would highly recommend it as having a consistent reference resource adds to student’s retention and overall growth. A great way to differentiate instruction is to print the power point in notes format for specific students so that they can simply highlight the important text. I will additionally include a “Notes” page which will have all the notes for a given unit’s power-point typed, which may prove useful for students who were absent for instruction or have difficulty writing the notes themselves.
Additionally, I include a Teacher’s Unit Guide with each Power-point. Within this document I try to include a summation of what I talk about on each slide, points I try to drive home, demonstrations I might conduct, and stories I will tell which reinforce the content.
