This lab will help students to better understand the scale of the solar system. Many students have the misconception that the planets are the same distance from one another! They're not! This lab also shows students just how small the Sun could appear to be from another planet's perspective.
With this lab activity, students will first use the Power Point to start their 'lab write-up'. When the written portion of their lab is complete, they will break into separate groups, and move into the hallway for the second part of the lab. When I've done this lab, it has worked the best when students are in pairs.
The Power Point and write-up encourages students to better understand the scientific method and prepare for future grade levels in which writing up a lab is expected.
Required materials: Rulers, Tape, Sun and Planet Posters (INCLUDED!)
When printing the Sun, on "Page Size & Handling" on the printing options, select that you want to print it as a poster, so that it will do so.
You will need between 300 to 310 feet of hallway to do this lab. If you don't have a long enough hallway, then this lab could be adapted as an outside lab.
