Product Description
A 7-page lab document that challenges students to investigate whether the dimensions of their school’s gymnasium provide enough space for the average student to come to a full, complete stop during a basketball game.

After conducting the investigation, students are asked to analyze their class data and write a formal complaint letter to a school official to voice their concerns about the safety in the gymnasium while providing experimental data to justify their position. The letter serves as the lab conclusion.

This lab activity arose because our school’s gymnasium is an old building with very little space between the out-of-bounds lines of the basketball and volleyball courts and the walls. After a number of student concussions, I decided to create an activity that allowed students to investigate whether the gym was safe enough for sporting events by collecting quantitative data. After conducting the first round of experiments, it became clear that the gym did not provide enough stopping distance for the average student. I then had my students write formal complaint letters to the director of facilities, in which they discussed the nature of their concern, outlined the procedure of the investigation, presented quantitative data to prove their position, and offered suggestions to improve the safety of the building
