In this lab activity, students test a number of household food items with different reagent solutions to determine if they contain simple sugars, starches, lipids, or proteins. This lab idea is NOT original, and it can be found various places online and elsewhere. However, what makes my version of this lab unique is its clarity and ease for students with limited literacy. The Flesch-Kincaid reading level of my version of this lab is 5.4. Additionally, each set of directions includes questions to ensure that students have understood that step before they go on.
