A 4-page lab document
that challenges students to investigate which toy pull-back car travels at the quickest average speed over a specified distance (2m)
After performing the experiment and collecting data for distance and average time, students are asked to calculate the average speed of each car using the formula S=D/T
. Then, students are asked to make a graph to summarize their results and answer several analysis questions.
This lab activity arose because I wanted to create a lab activity that allowed students to practice calculating average speed using toys in a fun and exciting way. Since the toy cars do not always travel in perfectly straight lines, the lab also provides students the opportunity to perform multiple trials, but more importantly, to evaluate the procedure and make suggestions to improve the overall experiment design.
