Product Description
This 5-page Ziploc Bag Physical and Chemical Changes lab activity is designed to give students experience observing different chemical reactions and identify them as physical or chemical changes according to set criteria..

To perform the activity, students combine different substances (baking soda, calcium chloride, water, phenol red) in different quantities in 4 separate Ziploc bags and observe what happens when the reactants combine . Students are instructed to make observations about any color changes, temperature changes, bag volume changes, signs of gas production (fizzing, bubbling), or any additional relevant observations. After students record their initial observations, they are to interpret their results to determine whether a physical or chemical change has occurred in each bag.

It is recommended that prior to conducting this activity, students must know the difference between a physical and chemical change, as well as the four major signs that a chemical change has occurred: a change in color, a change in energy, formation of a gas, or formation of a precipitate.
