Hey y'all!

I made this activity to reinforce what unions are and why some workers feel that they need unions to negotiate with management. I start with a convo about the Fight for Fifteen (something they've probably heard about, especially at my Title 1 school), and segue into reminding them of the horrible working conditions of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Short analysis of the political cartoon on the first slide.

The next part is a simple vocabulary activity where students use their technology or their textbooks to research. For the sake of time, I allowed my students to pair up and divide the work among themselves, as long as they shared their notes and discussed it a bit. Just a heads up, you may actually have to get up and walk around the class to make sure they are on task and on topic ;)

On the board, I made it clear that they needed at least 1 sentence of their opinion about the vocabulary word. This helps them create a new sentence while incorporating their own ideas about the subject. When they share the work, sometimes the students disagree about opinions... It creates some dynamic discussions if you facilitate it properly!

If you forgot to plan a lesson on this stuff or you need to reinforce prior knowledge, this is for you!
