An excellent inquiry experiment where students place the lactase enzyme in a dialysis membrane which is placed into a solution of lactose. The procedure is described in detail and students use critical thinking as they make conclusions on the size of the molecules based on the presence of glucose. The result table can be a stand-alone assignment or incorporated into an interactive lab notebook. The procedure and materials are provided in written form for some students to paste into their lab notebook so that you may differentiate a lab write-up. In addition to the enzyme, running the activity requires the availability of dialysis membranes, lactose, and glucose test strips.
