Start out by passing out 1 two-sided red/yellow counter to each student. Show students how they can make the number “1” with 1 yellow and 0 red counters. Then record that on their sheets.
Then give students another counter and show how they can make the number “2” with 2 yellow counters and 0 red counters and record it. Then have them take one counter from the yellow side and turn it over and lay it on the red side of the ladybug. Show them how they can make “2” with 1 yellow counter and 1 red counter also. Continue with the rest of the numbers…helping students discover all the ways they can make a number with different combinations.
This activity should be completed in two days ideally. You can “print” the file into a Smart Notebook to make it more interactive or use your document camera to model for your students.
There is an assessment of this activity with the number “9.” I pull students over to my table one at a time to do this assessment individually.
