This resource is an in-depth landforms and earth changes unit with detailed, science lesson plans for second grade. Students learn features of landforms and bodies of water, explore weathering, erosion, and deposition through lab experiments, and gain understanding of the causes and effects of Earth changes and events that occur both quickly and slowly. Students explore tools people use to prevent or slow wind and water from changing the shape of the land.

Students are introduced to science practices, such as planning and carrying out investigations, making observations, building and testing models, collecting and analyzing data, and designing solutions to real-world problems.

The 7 high-interest lessons in this unit use real photographs in a detailed teaching Power Point. Each lesson is followed by science journal and center activities, partner discussion questions, videos, and creative hands-on lab investigations.

DISTANCE LEARNING: I have added directions for adapting and digitizing this resource for distance learning and use with Google Classroom. This unit is also available in a ready to use digital version.

Develop a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area. Assessment does not include quantitative scaling in models.
Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land. Examples of solutions could include different designs of dikes and windbreaks to hold back wind and water, and different designs for using shrubs, grass, and trees to hold back the land.
Obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid.
Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or slowly. Examples of events and timescales could include volcanic explosions and earthquakes, which happen quickly and erosion of rocks, which occurs slowly. Assessment does not include quantitative measurements of timescales.
