A landform is a natural feature of the Earth's surface,and then there are many different examples of each landform, which are sometimes referred to as a physical feature.

This passage does NOT go over what landforms are and the characteristics of landforms in general, but it discusses ten specific landforms/features found in the United States. It discusses BASIC details about those ten. You can then offer more details if you want to elaborate.

The ten are: Atlantic Coastal Plain, Great Plains, Continental Divide, the Great Basin, Death Valley, Gulf of Mexico, St. Lawrence River, Appalachian Mountains, and the Great Lakes

The passage is written from the angle of explaining to kids that we discuss many different historical events in social studies that are associated with particular landform/features, and it is important to know where these specific physical features are located. Therefore, the passage would work great for the beginning of the year, but of course, it could be used any time.

For example, this passage tells a little about the location of the Great Plains, which is important to know the location of if you are talking about the Plains Native American Tribe. Or, it's important to know the location of the Rocky Mountains if you are talking about Lewis and Clark.

The passage is copied as a booklet style, meaning you will print on the front and back of one page. Students will then fold the one page booklet, so that there is a cute cover. When they open it up, they find the passage on the inside. It will glue perfectly inside their notebook.

Once the passage is glued in their notebook, they can glue the two flippables in the notebook.

For the flippables, there is a black/white image of each feature. Students will look at the map, and then lift the flap and write which feature is pictured. You may want to provide a map for this.

==================

In Georgia for 4th grade, we have a standard for social studies that says: Locate major physical features of the United States; include the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Great Plains, Continental Divide, the Great Basin, Death Valley, Gulf of Mexico, St. Lawrence River, and the Great Lakes.

This passage was written with 4th graders in mind, but it could be used with students beyond that grade, as well. Even if you are not a teacher in Georgia though, it will work perfectly, as they are non-fiction and don’t include anything specific to the state of Georgia.
