Landforms, natural resources and map skills are combined in this unit. I like to use this project as an end of the unit project. Students will be creating a pirate map which features a compass rose, map key, title and map scale. Also on this map, they will need to create at least 4 landforms. The "treasure" at the X must be a natural resource. My students love sharing their maps with one another and showing their landforms and the different natural resources as treasure. I also use this project for a writing directions and creative writing project.
Included with this file are step by step visual directions for building the map with 2 examples being built. *This file is a pdf file and not a power point but it will still project on to the screen and you can click through the pages.
I have included a checklist for students to use as they build their maps and a grading sheet.
There are also 6 pages of lined paper for students to write directions to follow the path to the X and for a creative writing activity. I like to have my students tell the adventure of a pirate following the map. We work on transitional words while we write.
A cut and paste page is also included to practice cardinal and intermediate directions.
