Throughout the history of the United States there have only been 17 Chief Justices of the Supreme Court. As the country developed, the Chief Justices have played a major role in determining the direction of the United States. Their rulings have often been a reflection of the collective thinking of the country but their rulings have also pushed the country in directions that it may or may not have wanted to go.
During their tenure, the Courts decisions reference the last name of the Chief Justice. Each Court made its own mark as the United States grew and society became more complex. Many laws were added over time and the Supreme Court had to balance these new laws in light of constitutional law. In cases where the law is silent or has been vague, the Court has ruled by its interpretation of Constitutional law, even at the expense of overturning previous Supreme Court rulings. Each Court has left its distinct mark through Landmark Supreme Court Cases.
