This is a unit plan, handouts, and rubric on a digital story project called "Landmarks & Legacies".
From the unit rationale: In communities throughout the United States and abroad, landmarks are often some of the most recognizable and popular spots. Students can learn much about themselves and where they have come from by researching landmarks in their towns. Understanding and appreciating one’s community helps to strengthen civic mindsets and encourage students to actively engage in their town in a multitude of ways. In a school district where students may be ashamed or negative about their community, it is an important unit to connect them with their past, present, and their future. They will not only read and write about their chosen landmark, but they will also engage with the community through interviews and trips to landmarks and historical societies, culminating in the creation of a digital story.
