This is a package of five lessons based on the real world application of fractional numbers.
The lessons are based on the application of mathematics in a real-world problem solving. So each lesson begins with a scenario.
The main idea for these five lessons is based on a landscaping company hired to landscape areas of a town where students are applying their knowledge of fractional numbers, area, perimeter, decimal numbers, and degrees in a circle
The lessons are planned as follows:
Lesson 1—students explore fractions of circles, squares, and rectangles. This lesson includes differentiated material for guided learning.
Lesson 2—students learn to divide a circle into equal portions and work out how many degrees are in each portion and represent this as fractional numbers.
Lesson 3—students divide the area of a square and rectangle into equal portions and represent these portions as fractional numbers.
Lesson 4—students calculate the total cost of planting on a fraction of the rotary and see if they are able to keep to a budget.
Lesson 5—students calculate the total cost of planting on a fraction of the square and rectangle and see if they can keep to a budget.
