Introduce your students to the awesome Langston Hughes, one of many writers who contributed greatly to the Harlem Renaissance and to Maya Angelou, a product of the Renaissance.
The 16 slide PowerPoint will introduce students to Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and the overall assignment.
Students must use critical thinking skills as they will read poems from each author to complete a comparison and contrast.
Students will be divided into four groups and will be assigned one of Hughes' and Angelou's poems.
Grouping depends upon your class size. If I have a large group, then divide into six groups which means some groups will have the same assignment which is perfectly fine. The goal is to have an engaging class discussion.
Students will be responsible for discussing and presenting different elements based on the poems such as tone, symbolism, and the African American condition in the mid-19th century to the 21st century.
All the poems are a pleasure to read and students can use knowledge gained during the Harlem Renaissance study.
After student groups are finished, all members must present their answers.
My students enjoyed the lesson and I enjoyed their presentations!
