The "Mother to Son" Handout is a practical, useful tool to help students break down and truly comprehend Langston Hughes' famous poem. A poem and picture of Hughes are included in the first half of the handout. On the second half of the handout, students are provided space to paraphrase five different sections of the poem. The five sections are split thematically. Finally, students are asked to summarize the poem in one sentence, using components of their five paraphrased sections. Created by Kevin Steinhauser.
