PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Langston Hughes was a powerful poet whose words captured important moments in the African American experience from the Harlem Renaissance to the Civil Rights Movement.

In this activity, students analyze Hughes’ poem “Harlem.” They reflect on its historical context and implications and apply Hughes’ words to their own lives. They complete the activity with the creation of a visual response to the poem, thus making the poem more personally meaningful while addressing multiple intelligences and learning styles / preferences.

Students may complete this activity using the Internet to locate the poem (URLs provided on activity sheet), or you could make copies of the poem to distribute in the classroom:
