Product Description
This language arts packet contains discussion questions, organizers, an essay prompt, a science connection and word study activities to accompany your reading of A Day's Work by Eve Bunting. Please download the free 14 page preview to see an outline of the mini unit.

In this packet, you will find:
*3 options for pre-reading discussion/writing
*a sequencing activity
*2 reading organizer options {with possible student responses}
*4 pages of higher order thinking prompts for reading response {with possible student responses}
*an extended response (comparing character reactions) and a graphic organizer
*2 passages about the plants mentioned in the text (chickweed and ice plants) and 1 page of questions
* vocabulary word cards to include in your vocabulary routine
*differentiated word work for the suffix -er meaning an occupation (choreographer, marathoner)
*-er as a comparison (taller, smaller)
*sorting words with -er endings (sorting comparisons and occupations)

To give you an idea of pacing, in my classroom, we spent 2 days reading and responding to the text. We completed one organizer each day and answered a few questions. We worked on vocabulary on the first reading and then studied the -er suffix over the next two days. I used the -er comparisons with my English Language Learners in a small group during that time. My 5th grade students indepdendently read the two nonfiction pieces and answered questions during one reading period. For the writing, we spent one writing period planning and took two days to write our drafts. In all, this material provided 3 days of reading, writing and word study instruction.
