This is the second in a series of menus for independent work in Language Arts.
This menu is part of a bundle! Check it out here:
This Language Arts Menu is a fun and funky way of giving students some choice in their independent work. The activities support important reading and writing skills including vocabulary, spelling, understanding prefixes, figurative language, narrative writing, persuasive writing, comprehension, and more! Each activity is given a "price," and the menu has a fun diner theme.
The activities assume the students are reading SOMETHING, whether that be a novel, picture book, or something from their textbook.
Simply print, laminate, and let students choose their work. This download comes with the "menu" with activities and directions for students. It also comes with a "check" on which students can report what work they did that day. You can assign a "meal" (one appetizer, one main dish, and one dessert), or you can tell students they have to "spend" a certain dollar amount on the menu.
I developed this menu because my school implemented a mandatory 30 minute RTI time, and we needed something for the other students to work on as we intervened with certain students. It could also be used during centers or as fast-finisher work. These activities will work well with high-level 3rd graders, 4th graders, and 5th graders. The activities are aligned with the following 4th grade Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions).
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean).
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.4b Read grade-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
And the following 5th grade Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.5.4b Read grade-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.5.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
