In this newly revised (7-16) resource about the Rainforest, based on the Jane Yolen book, you will find materials to use with students in speech therapy, special education, or those in general education who require differentiated instruction/additional supports, to meet the CCSS for informational text in special ed.
These materials are designed to go with the Jane Yolen book "Welcome to the Greenhouse," and can be a part of a unit on the rainforest, or simply a stand-alone set of activities about the book.
For speech-language pathologists, it is possible to condense the guided reading lesson plans and use the book across a couple of sessions to build descriptive language and vocabulary.
This resource includes:
shared reading lesson plans for 5 days;
including Before-During-After activities for 4 days and 5th day additional activities,
vocabulary cards and activities,
descriptive vocabulary building activities,
a comparison/Venn diagram describing activity,
a "how I get around" activity,
and identifying vocabulary words by whether they are seen or heard;
sorting activities about which animals live in the rainforest and which layer of the rainforest they live in;
a barrier language activity for giving and following directions;
2 writing activities;
and - if appropriate for your students - a metaphor activity.
There is also an interactive, clinician written book about the rainforest. You can make a copy for each of your students.
