A receptive/expressive language assessment using the wordless picture book Chalk by Bill Thomson. Various parts of this assessment can be used and adapted for grade K-5. It looks at story-telling skills, sequencing, grammar (helping verbs, irr/reg past tense verbs, prepositions, pronouns), inferencing/predicting skills, answering WH questions, perspective-taking and emotional understanding, use of descriptive vocabulary, and labeling. Students do a picture walk, respond to WH questions, inferencing, and prediction questions, and then retell the story in their own words. Takes approximately 20-30 minutes to administer.
