If you are reading "The Laramie Project" or want a great lesson plan on how to do a close reading, complete with handouts, then this is for you.
This is an 8 page Microsoft Word document. It is a 4-page lesson plan and a 4-page student-friendly handout.
The lesson plan includes every thing you need, including an independent reading prompt, aim, do-now, instructional objective, Common Core Standard, Mini-lesson, Pivotal Questions, Activity, and Summation.
The handout includes the most important notes, including the aim, do-now, a little organizer space for responses to the do-now and pivotal questions, etc. You can collect the handout at the end to assess student understanding, or have the students keep it as part of their notes. Additionally, if you have an ELMO or an overhead projector that can use paper, simply pop the handout up there and have the students copy their notes right from there.
The students will understand how to do a close reading and they will, through developing personal responses to the text, have a much deeper understanding of "The Laramie Project."
I included my detailed model of how to do the close reading with personal response using "Moment: The Gem City of the Plains" from "The Laramie Project," but you can choose to use your own example if you like of course. Enjoy!
