This is a fun activity for your students to do on on the last day or during the last week of school. It will allow you and the rest of the class to learn about students’ summer plans and more. Students will love how the colors and items used on their glyphs depend on information about them as individuals.
Depending on the age group of your students, you may want to explain that “glyph” is short for “hieroglyphics”. Hieroglyphics were pictures, characters, or symbols that were used in ancient civilizations (particularly associated with ancient Egypt) to represent words or phrases.
After students finish making the glyphs, have partners stand in front of the class with their set of directions and the “Last Day of School” glyph. Instruct each partner to share 3 things they learned about the other person simply by looking at their partner’s glyph. This is a great way for students to practice public speaking.
