This project includes an introductory activity to introduce various landforms and capital cities to the student. The student will then choose from these possible locations to conduct research, write descriptions and create and publish a project.
The writing project is aligned to the Common Core standards for grades 6-8 in social studies.
Day 1: Students will complete the scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt will ask them to find the absolute location or the city and country of selected landforms in Latin America. They will need maps with latitude and longitude on them. The purpose of these activities is to a.) familiarize the students with various Latin American landforms and b.) practice using absolute location, maps, and direction.
Day 2: Review the correct answers. I would use Google Earth to locate at least a few of these on my SMART board. Ask students to choose a location they are most interested in. Explain the writing assignment and set appropriate deadlines for research, peer editing, final project, etc.
Days 3-5 (more or less, depending on your needs): Student research, peer editing, project development.
Days 6-7: Presentation.
