Following the research practices of Marzano and vocabulary development, I have created an easy to use, adaptable latin root word organizer for students and teams. After students write the definition and draw a picture representation (or if you digitize, add an image), they team up with a small group to create a list of commonly found words that use the roots. After they have created their list on notecards, they come together as a class and present whole-group until a consensus is made on the top five words per Latin root, which are then written on their guide sheet. They create the list they will be tested on! Talk about ownership of vocabulary! This is a great way to increase engagement, actively produce "word researchers" and build a community of learners.
