INTRODUCTION

This Latin Roots packet is the first in a set of 20 (see “Latin Roots Packets – Set of 20”) designed to give students mastery of a Latin root and 10 corresponding English words.

This packet comprises 8 pages. The first page lists 10 English words that contain the ben/bene/bon root, along with definitions and example sentences. The words range from familiar (“bonus”) to relatively advanced (“beneficiary”). The following three pages contain exercises designed to promote mastery of each word. The first of these pages asks students to complete in logical ways sentence stems that feature the 10 vocabulary words; the second requires students to use a word bank to fill in the missing word in each sentence; and the third is a crossword that students may complete without looking at the front of the packet.

The second half of the packet includes a quiz and answer key. The quiz has 20 questions: 10 matching (in which students match the words with the appropriate definition) and 10 fill-in-the-blank (new sentences in the same format as those in the exercise).

Because the English language comes partially from Latin, knowing the definition of Latin roots can be helpful in determining the meaning of many related English words. Even in its new format, the SAT rewards students with a wide knowledge of English words and their relation to one another.

ACKNOWELDGEMENTS

Definitions are taken from the New Oxford American Dictionary and Merriam-Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary. A small number of sentences found in the packet are inspired by example sentences from these two sources.

All crosswords were created using the free crossword puzzle maker on the website A to Z Teacher Stuff Tools; it can be accessed on http://tools.atozteacherstuff.com/free-printable-crossword-puzzle-maker/.

Like me, students may find helpful the roots trees on the website Membean. A comprehensive list can be found on http://membean.com/treelist.

Finally, I would like to thank two of my own teachers: Ms. Bennett, who first showed me the value of Latin roots, and Ms. Williamson, who later inspired a love of the Latin language itself.
