This PowerPoint slideshow has slides which present the seal and motto of the United States -- E pluribus unum (One out of many) -- as well as those of the other states that have Latin mottoes, e.g. New York -- Excelsior! (Higher!), Kansas -- Ad astra per aspera (To the stars through difficulties), etc. Great for a change of pace mini-lesson. It can also be extended into a class project by having each student 1) select a Latin motto of the armed services, e.g. Marines --Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful), schools, colleges, universities , e.g. Harvard -- Veritas (Truth), etc. 2) Make a graphic design illustration of the motto, including the Latin motto and its English translation. 3) Have the students present their illustrated mottoes to the class. 4) Laminate the mottoes and hang them in your classroom or in the school language hallway, if permitted. The students enjoy this project ! Appropriate for Latin and social studies classrooms as well enrichment material for the gifted and talented.
