This unit is the 1st of four units I teach to my English II classes, and it is CCSS aligned. The unit focuses on several lessons that include stories by Gabriel Garcia Marquez along with his Nobel Prize Speech, "The Solitude of Latin America". The unit leads up to the final essay: How does magical realism in The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and Eyes of a Blue Dog reveal the author’s true point of view on reality for Latin America? Write an informative/explanatory five paragraph essay in which you analyze this question. Use at least three pieces of textual evidence to support an original thesis statement.
Throughout this unit, I incorporate the reading skills of context clues and connotation/denotation. During this unit, students are getting the foundation of grammar down that we will build upon later in the year: parts of speech and subjects/predicates.
This unit includes links to PDF files for graphic organizers, handouts, powerpoints, etc. Some links will not open, but I've included copies of the files in the appendix of the unit.
Although this outlines a long unit and provides direction, there is still room for the incorporation of your lessons as well when it comes to reinforcing parts of speech, writing directions, etc.
If you need ideas or have questions while teaching this unit, I will email you back. firstname.lastname@example.org
