This introduction/review of latitude and longitude created in Smart includes several images and hints for improved understanding and retention. Along with the lecture, I use oranges to demonstrate the hemispheres, lines of latitude/longitude, equator, and Prime Meridian. There are 3 slides related to latitude and the equator and 3 slides related to longitude and the Prime Meridian.
Idea: Cut one orange in half to show the northern and southern hemisphere and then cut "lines of latitude" or slices to show how the lines are parallel.
Then cut a different orange in half through the navel (poles) to show the western and eastern hemisphere and cut "lines of longitude" or wedges to show how these lines meet up at the poles.
I usually give each student a clementine to enjoy after the lesson.
