Have you ever been in the middle of a math lesson, looked out at your class and noticed that only a handful of students are engaged? Some students look bored, while others are lost or frustrated? Such is the case often with whole-group math instruction. That is why guided math is so beneficial! You are able to teach each student at their own pace. Perhaps you've wanted to start teaching math through small group instruction, but haven't known how. What do you do with the rest of the class while you are teaching? How do you make sure they are on task while you are focused on teaching small groups? The key is making sure you set clear expectations from the beginning through practice and modeling.
I so strongly believe in teaching math through a guided math format that I am providing this resource FREE OF CHARGE, because I want everyone to be able to have the resources they need to get started!
I've included 5 days of lesson plans, including teacher talk, to help you model and practice the three components of guided math: Teacher mini-lessons, independent practice, and partner skill games. Even better, I've included all the resources you need to get started!
The worksheets and skill topics are appropriate for 3rd grade at the beginning of the year (place value to the hundreds place and adding two digit numbers), but other grades could use the same format and teacher talk to introduce the components, just adjust with different worksheets and teacher lessons.
