LWFC Bell Ringers

CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

DAILY ASSESSMENT OF COMPREHENSION AND COMPLETION

PROMOTE CLOSE READING AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Whether you assign each chapter as reading homework to your students, or read together as a class, you can count on these daily bell ringers to ensure that students are reading attentively and taking note of important characters and events! The answers for these Bell Ringers cannot be found in online summaries and require active engagement with the text, so your students will be rewarded for their good study habits!

I assign the bell ringer at the beginning of each class. Not only does this ensure that students are on time, but it also serves as the perfect transition into a discussion of the novel. I've chosen these bell ringers for their relationship to important symbols, events, or character developments, such as the Mexican Revolution, the relationship between Tita and Mama Elena, or the symbolic colour red. In the past, I've also offered students the opportunity to make up for lost points by answering oral comprehension questions after reviewing the bell ringer answers. Students also have the opportunity to write discussion questions on the back of their quiz if they finish early.

They often have great questions! For this reason, I sometimes award bonus points to questions that later become a part of classroom

discussions or assessments.

Students love Magical Realism for it's captivating and entertaining qualities. I pair this novel with my Magical Realism Mini-Lesson, where I have students engage with various paintings by Rob Gonsalves as well as the short story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in order to introduce the genre of Magical Realism.
