LITERARY CRITICISM WITH INTRODUCTORY LESSON

4-LEVEL RUBRIC AND READY-TO-PRINT INSTRUCTIONS

EXAMPLES AND REAL STUDENT EXEMPLAR INCLUDED

Literary Criticism is an important skill for any secondary English student.  Guide your students into the shoes of gender theorists, historians, sociologists and Jungian psychologists with this Literary Criticism summative assessment!

Laura Esquivel's magical novel Like Water For Chocolate is a great novel to adopt multiple lenses while reading.  From historical references to the Mexican Revolution and Native American appropriation, to feminist allusions to Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own," to cultural commentary on the roles of the family - this novel is a treasure chest of metaphoric references!

This resource includes a PowerPoint lesson that can be used to introduce the process of Literary Criticism.  I have also included a ready-to-print handout that outlines the assessment instruction and includes a 4-level rubric with a teacher comment section reflecting the following categories: Knowledge, Inquiry, Communication and Application.  These handouts are editable in the case you'd like to add anything else to them - I find it particularly helpful to add an indication on how to turn in completed work! (Ie. Turnitin.com, Google Classroom, USB stick, paper with YouTube link, etc.)

A real exemplar created by my International Students in Thailand has been included with this resource.  (In case you're wondering - yes, I did have a student named Pooh!  Your students will hopefully get a kick out of this.) . If you have trouble viewing the video on YouTube, make sure your browser is up-to-date!  I use Safari to show this video in my classroom.

This product pairs well with my Daily Bell Ringers for Like Water For Chocolate, as well as my Magical Realism Mini-Lesson.
