Product Description

Students will use this activity to get an understanding of the two current dominant political parties in the United States (Democrat and Republicans) and take a quiz to get an idea where they stand politically. (This will help in the simulation game on Icivics.) The class will then have to make an Icivics account and play the congress game. The game simulates how a bill is made into a law. Students will then select a political party, whether to be in the senate or house, pick an issue and try to pass legislation that they believe in. There are reflection questions included.

Students will have to be familiar with the following terms/concepts: Congress, legislation, senate, house of representatives, veto, 2/3 majority, amendment, bill

I usually start with a powerpoint briefly outlining congress and the legislative branch. Then I show the oldy but goody "I'm just a bill" video on youtube.

Included:

a brief description of democrats/republicans

a link to a democrat/republican quiz

a link to the simulation game

reflection questions
