The contrast between the ideas of Islam and Hinduism illustrate two widely differing views on the divine, the nature of reality, and everyday life. With the conquering of India by the Islamic Mughal Empire, these two views of life can into contact and conflict, a conflict that in many ways continue to this day. However, there were also periods of great tolerance, where these two divergent views of life lived together in harmony. In a Common Core approach the students will be reading the “Laws of Manu” which laid the basis for Hindu life. They will then create an illustrated brochure defining the “do’s and don’ts” of the castes of Priests, Rulers, Commonors, and Servants. Hinduism and Islam can also be viewed as “religious opposites” as can be seen in the information sheet provided.
